WHY 1870 MATTERS
The 1870 census is often a turning point.
For many African American families, the 1870 U.S. census is the first federal census after emancipation where formerly enslaved people may appear by name. Research before that point usually requires indirect clues, careful place work, and records created by courts, employers, churches, government agencies, or former enslavers.
Context is not proof by itself
Slave schedules can be useful context, but they generally enumerate enslaved individuals without names. They are not usually direct proof of identity on their own.
