Begin with a low-pressure pass
Do not wait for perfect information. Start by grouping photographs and stories into simple piles: known people, partly known people, unknown people, places, events, and items that need a relative's help.
The first goal is not perfection. The first goal is to prevent context from disappearing.
Capture what is known
For each photograph or story, record:
- Who appears or is mentioned
- Who supplied the information
- Where the photo or story may belong
- Whether the detail is known, remembered, guessed, or unknown
- Any dates, places, captions, handwriting, or objects that help identify context
Keep uncertainty visible
Avoid turning a guess into a fact. A note such as "possibly Aunt Maria, identified by cousin Ana in 2026" is more useful than a confident label that cannot be traced.
Uncertainty is not a weakness. It is part of honest preservation.
Invite family help simply
If relatives can help, ask small questions:
- Do you know who is in this photo?
- Do you remember where this was taken?
- What story do you associate with this person?
- Would you like your name recorded as the contributor?
Roots Adventure Lite Archive is designed around this kind of gentle participation, while the Full Archive adds more research and evidence structure when the project needs depth.
